Cats are sensitive creatures, and transitioning into a new environment, especially one already claimed by other animals, can be stressful for them. To ensure a smooth integration, follow these expert tips from our team to make your new cat feel welcome.
Step #1: Establish a safe space for your new cat
It may take several days for your new cat to feel comfortable around you, and even longer if you have other pets. Create a safe and secure environment for your cat by providing them with their own dedicated resources. Set up a spacious room with their litter box, food and water bowls, scratching post, and bedding, allowing them to have their essentials without competition. Spend quality time playing, petting, and interacting with your new cat to help them get used to your presence. Additionally, grant them uninterrupted time to explore and familiarize themselves with their new surroundings.
Step #2: Maintain consistency in diet
The stress of relocating to a new environment can unsettle a cat’s delicate digestive system. To minimize further stress, continue feeding your cat the same food they were accustomed to. If you plan to switch to a new diet, give them a few days to settle in before gradually introducing the new food over the course of a week.
Step #3: Allow ample time for adjustment
It may take a week or two for your cat to fully settle into their new home. During this period, refrain from introducing them to family and friends.
